THE MUSICOM STORY
In 2002 I decided that I wanted to house my computer instruction and musical services under one roof. There was a part of me that thought it might be a crazy, and confusing idea to offer two different services in one company. There was also a part of me that told me to open the company, anyway.
That was the voice I listened to, and thankfully I did. On October 7, 2002 Musicom opened it’s doors.
For the next few months that followed, Musicom was only a side business, while I worked during the day at Oakland Community College. On January 17, 2003, I became a displaced worker, when budget cuts downsized our department. From that moment on, Musicom became my full-time career.
The first five years were rough, as I was often spending more money than I was taking in. Most of this money was being spent on advertising. I was almost ready to give up, until research I did informed me that this was typical of start up businesses. I stayed the course, and in 2006 got an on-going contract with Schoolcraft College, and began increasing my tutoring clients. In 2007, things began to really heat up as I had secured a lucrative on-going contract with Dorsey Schools. Ironically, I began on my birthday, August 13th, of that year; a nice birthday present to myself. I thank my wife Donna, for helping me to secure this.
And then, there’s the music part of the business.
While operating the educational part of the business, I began to book shows locally, and with national acts, most notably, LOOKING GLASS FEATURING ELLIOT LURIE, known for the #1 1972 hit, “BRANDY (YOU’RE A FINE GIRL).” My initial contact to Elliot was one of peddling my songs for use in movies, since he was a music supervisor for film. But as the conversation moved on, we had reformed his old band before hanging up the phone.
From 2007 on, Musicom’s profits began to rise exponentially. New clients in both music and computer education would come aboard, and old clients wanted more. I was operating as a sole proprietor, but it got to the point where I needed to add sub-contractors, so I did. To this day, I still operate as a sole proprietor, but have business relationships with many programmers, instructors, agents, artists, musicians, producers, etc.
Our list of some of our many clients is crazy cool:

FAQ
Are you a booking agency?
Answer: No. Booking agencies will act as headhunters for acts, trying to marry the right act to a club. I don’t do that. And as a matter of fact, I have partnered with agencies in offering my shows to them.
Do you have a building where your business is located?
Answer: No. I have operated as a sole proprietor, utilizing the location of the businesses where I perform. Down the road, if the Covid-19 situation is no longer with us, I may offer classroom instruction.
Do you offer training on music software?
Answer: Not at this time, but that is an area that I will eventually.
